Radio Radio

Two weeks ago, as I trolled through the preset stations on my car radio, I suddenly heard XMAS MUSAK. I figured I’d pressed two buttons at the same time or something. After jamming my finger repeatedly on the “4” button, though, I realized that the station that used to be Xfm, Vancouver’s New Rock Alternative, was now playing XMAS MUSAK 24/7. Or, 24/20, depending on who you’re asking. Last year this happened to KISS FM and the day after XMAS, it became JACK. So who knows what’ll happen this Boxing Day. Bated breath, me, etc.

Meanwhile, though, I am missing a spot on my tuner and I keep forgetting it’s XMAS MUSAK and pressing the button as I drive and Agh! Michael Buble! Agh! So I find 90.1, CJSF. Simon Fraser University’s radio station. It kicks all the butt! I used to listen to CiTR, from UBC, but the reception is not so good for me unless I’m in very specific parts of the city. But SFU is broadcasting from the top of a mountain. It is good.

As long as there is college radio, we will be free of despair.
