I think it would be better
\nif the cats of the world were not so neurotic
\nif they could have calm hearts like labrador retrievers
\nif they could see that the world exists to please them
\nand that they need not worry. <\/p>\n
people say cats are independent
\nthat they like their solitude
\nthat they don’t need people.
\nby these definitions, I am a cat person.
\nexcepting I have never encountered a cat like this
\nwell, only one, and he moved out
\n– seriously –
\nI miss him still.<\/p>\n
maybe it’s just the cats I’ve met
\nbut I have never once had the feeling
\nthat a cat is at peace.
\nthey are always pacing, scratching, turning in circles
\nweaving tails through my legs
\nnosing my face, reminding me about dinner,
\njumping from counter to floor, floor to couch, couch to counter,
\nstaring at me intently
\nbecause I might move suddenly
\nand then what? o god! anything could happen!<\/i><\/p>\n
despite the ongoing history of me
\nhaving never once murdered a cat
\n(or even beat one [very hard])
\nmy own cat’s damaged past
\nprevents him from trusting me
\nand this, unreasonably,
\nmakes me resentful,
\nwhich he senses
\nand then internalizes,
\ncausing him to behave like a
\nyoung child with Issues.
\nI adopted a mouser! Not a troubled kid
\nwho will steal my car at 13
\nand hide food under his bed!<\/p>\n
(Not that those children don’t need love.
\nBut I would never adopt one because I
\nknow my emotional limits.)<\/p>\n
