Today’s prompt thanks to Arwen: Write a sonnet about an object you can see from where you’re sitting.<\/i><\/p>\n
I call this style of sonnet The Tortured Style<\/i> ’cause it sure ain’t Italian, Shakespearean or AnyRealPoet-ian.<\/p>\n
Ahem.<\/p>\n
Eeyore One<\/b><\/p>\n
You grey, sloping beast, you dreary old thing
\nstaring at the dark, cold glass, the artful
\nlogs behind it. Any promises of spring
\nare long gone now. This freezing day will pull
\nthe bones from under my skin, my eyes will
\nwater like taps when I emerge, better
\nto keep the fireplace dull and quiet and still
\nwhile I rip and curl sentence and letter.
\nEeyore, your sad demeanor reminds me
\nof myself, too many times to count. I
\ndroop and wilt and frown so easily.
\nIt is easier to laugh than to cry.
\nWriting about watching a thing unreal;
\nI’m glad this sonnet won’t earn my next meal.<\/p>\n
And one in Good Old Free Verse because concentrating on writing rhyming poetry gave me a headache. <\/p>\n
Eeyore Two<\/b><\/p>\n
Eeyore has a black strip of hair along his head,
\na wide bottom – he is pear shaped –
\nand of course, a detachable tail.<\/p>\n
Eeyore is the grey of a slow raincloud. <\/p>\n
He is the fat drop about to spatter.<\/p>\n
He is November, in a stuffed animal form,
\ndreary.<\/p>\n
His fuzzed back faces me. If I could see his eyes, oval and downcast,
\nI would clutch him by his long ears
